Following on from my last blog article I though it would be a good idea to discuss some ways in which to use affirmations in your day to day life to help combat automatic negative thoughts.
Firstly where do you get affirmations from? The internet is a great source of free affirmations as is pinterest (I am a bit of a pinterest addict!) or you can tailor something to be specific to you. It is important that :
a) You can connect with the affirmation;
b) It is positive and encouraging; and
c) It is relevant to you and your issue.
Some examples:
Lack confidence? Try – I CAN do whatever I set my mind to.
Low self esteem/anxiety when around strangers? Try – I am intelligent, kind and beautiful and that is how people see me.
High anxiety/fear? Try – I am in control of my thoughts and feelings.

For affirmations to work the key is repetition, repetition and more repetition!! Automatic Negative Thoughts are persistent little buggers, but they can be controlled. You need to listen to your internal dialogue and become familiar with the triggers and signs (such as certain situations) that precede automatic negative thoughts. The trick is to try to get the positive affirmation in first, when you recognise the triggers or signs, before the negative thought materialises. This will take time, commitment and lots and lots of practice but you CAN do it.
Another tip is to have affirmations in places where you will see them regularly so they are easily called to mind when they are needed. For me this includes in my diary, on the fridge door and next to the nappy change table!!
Good luck and remember – YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!
