Expressing Emotions Through Art

Have you ever felt something and not been able to find the words to describe what you are feeling?

When you are suffering inside but your response to the question "How are you?" is always "I'm fine." because the reality is you just don't know how to describe what is going on inside your head?

Whether your issue is anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness, mental illness, stress, grief or loss or anything else - having a lack of adequate vocabulary in order to be able to convey the depth of your emotion is a common occurrence.

I know I tried in vain to find words that could describe what was going on inside my head. I'd often wish I was better at drawing as I have seen many images that have resonated with me in depicting depression and anxiety but none of them were purely my journey or my experience. I really felt like I needed a way to express myself, what was going on inside my head so I could externalise it and maybe even rationalise it a little bit. So I started researching Art Therapy and was amazed at the different mediums being used and in different situations and scenarios. The medium that really appealed to me was that of collage - there is no end to the materials that can be used and you do not necessarily have to be a skilled artist in order to be able to create something that is personally meaningful.

This then got me thinking that maybe if I was feeling this way then maybe others would be too. As a counsellor I am always looking for different ways to help people deal with the issues they are experiencing and believe in the empowering support that can be obtained from a group setting. Therefore, I am really excited to announce that I will be holding some Art Therapy workshops through out the year on evenings and weekends. If you would like to register your interest for further information on these or any of the workshops I run please email wendy@amazeinlifecounselling.com.au and I will add you to the mailing list so you'll be first to hear of dates and venues.

With love, light & kindness

Wendy xx
