Today I will be following on with our case study of Kate. In case you have forgotten, here is a summary of Kate’s story:

Kate is in her 40’s, is married with 3 kids and works full time. Kate is happy to do this as she loves the home she has with her husband and children. However, Kate is beginning to feel as though her life is a never ending round of work, kids, after school activities, housework, bills and bickering with her husband. She is constantly questioning herself and her ability to be a good employee / wife / mother / daughter / sister / woman. She wishes she had more time to rediscover herself, her beliefs and her passions. She is not unhappy per se but she feels as though there is something missing. She is unable to find any joy in life, even in things she used to love.

Kate lies awake at night worrying about what if scenarios, past conversations and events and is unable to stop herself from dissecting and re-examining every aspect.

Last time Kate and I met I suggested she start writing her negative and recurring thoughts down in a journal and find some inspirational messages and have them where she will regularly see them. While Kate has noticed a slight change in her outlook she is still feeling quite defeated.

So in our session Kate and I go through her thought journal and identify patterns or events that are recurring. We will take time to go through these events and work out why Kate is unable to move past them – there is usually something unresolved about a situation for it to continue to return to our consciousness.

For homework I want Kate to continue to journal her thoughts. However, at the end of each day

she should now record the positives and successes she has achieved for the day. I believe that it is important to keep note of positive experiences as well as negative thought processes. The negative thoughts can take over and make you feel as though there is nothing positive in your life. It is so easy to overlook or forget what is going well.

This is why writing it down is important, when you look back through your journal you will see that not everything is negative – there is always balance to be found and bringing focus on the positive and balancing it with the negative can start a shift in your inner perception of your life and current situation.
